December Herb of the Month: Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important. It is a co-factor in multiple body processes including helping us fight off infections, and this time of year – that’s especially important! It is often called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced in the skin as a response to sunlight. Taking Vitamin D can help support the immune system, reduce body inflammation, boost weight loss, and fight depression.
In these winter months as we get less sun, we are prone to becoming deficient in Vitamin D. The majority of first-time patients I see have Vitamin D deficiency – so knowing many of us are deficient already – taking this supplement is worth considering. For my patients that are deficient, I recommend 5000 IU daily and then we have a recheck of values after 3 months of taking that dose.
